ANTIQUE GRANDE TOUR EQUESTRIAN BRONZE SCUPTURE OF MARCUS ARELIUS: Full size piece stand in the Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome, Italy. Figure measures approximately 15 inches tall x 13 inches long. Measures overall 21 inches tall with marble base. Marcus Aurelius (April 121 to March 180 AD) was the Roman Emperor from 161 to 180 AD. He was the last of the so called “Five Good Emperors” because he put the needs of the people of Rome before his desire for glory. He was a practitioner of Stoicism, and his untitled writing, commonly known as Meditations, is a significant source of our modern understanding of ancient Stoic philosophy. The persecutions of Christians during his reign was considered necessary to maintain peace as with no separation of church and state, a refusal to acknowledge gods was a refusal to accept the laws of the state .His death in 180 is considered the end of the Pax Romana  and the increasing instability in the west that followed has traditionally been seen as the beginning of the eventual Fall of the Western Roman Empire.SOLD $960

LATE ADDITION: "The Day The Earth Stood Still" 1951 poster for the RKO Theatre in Boston. The RKO Theater was located in the theatre district in Boston on Washington Street and featured films, big band concerts and a variety of theatre perfomances. The theatre operated from the 1930's to the 1950's.

The poster is one sheet mounted on plywood, which was a piece of wall discovered in a cellar in Hingham, Massachusetts. The homeowner lived in the home for over 47 years and it was there when she moved in.
The film was directed by Robert Wise and was produced by 20th Century Fox in 1951. Although this was not the first film to start the sci-fi craze of the 1950's, it was the most important. The film gave some legitimacy to the genre and asked the question of how man would react to learning we are not alone in the universe. The second "co-hit" film playing was "Jungle Manhunt", a 1951 adventure film and was an entry in the "Jungle Jim" series of films starring Johnny Weissmuller.
The poster has been glued to the plywood and was on display at the RKO Theatre in 1951. It has pin holes, staining and some loss.

SOUTHERN SLAVE OCCUPATIONAL TAG or DOG TAG: Early round metal slave occupational tag. Stamped 21and I T HOUSE (tag maker?) on one side and 1867 C.F. Rond? Or Bond? Perhaps a house servant. There were laws in place in the early 1800s which allowed slave owners to hire out their slaves. These laws were in place in southern cities including Mobile, Norfolk, New Orleans, and Savannah. But, the only southern city that had a strict regulatory method for keeping track of these slaves was Charleston. Slave owners could rent out the services of their slaves to others for a fee. Slaves were required to wear a slave tag or identification marker. Fees or taxes paid to the city for the tags, similar to a license, were set based on the abilities and skills of the slave. The registration fee or tax for slave tags brought income to the city of Charleston. Approximately 1 ½ inches in diameter. Drilled for chain. Rich patina, irregular edge.
