1860 Colt Revolver, Native American presentation
“Presented to Grey Cloud”
Early Newcomb College,
Henrietta Bailey
Tiffany & Co. Sterling Chafing Dish/Server
Middleboro, MA. White’s Auctions’ Fall sale is set for Sunday October 6, 2013 offering a varied selection antiques in a wide range of eras and genres. The sale consists of a fine selection of paintings by listed artists, Art Pottery, sterling silver, fine jewelry, musical instruments, Oriental rugs, cobalt decorated stoneware, coins, early dolls, books and military items.
Of particular interest is a Model 1860 Colt Native American used revolver with the inscription on the backstrap “Presented to Grey Cloud”. The grip is decorated with brass tacks and five notched grooves. While this gun dates later 1800’s, in the early/mid 1800’s the name “Grey Cloud” actually belonged to two powerful Dakota Sioux women, a mother (1765-1844) and her daughter (1793-1849), the second Grey Cloud. The mother was the daughter of Chief Wabasha and sister of Sioux Chief Wabasha who fought in the War of 1812 between the US and England. Grey Cloud and her Scottish born husband lived on the east bank of the Mississippi River (presently Minneapolis). She was known as one of the most powerful fur traders of her time, amassing a fortune for herself and her family. The daughter Grey Cloud, also a fur trader, was their only child. The Treaties of 1837, by which the Sioux ceded their lands east of the Mississippi forced the tribes to move to an island in the Mississippi, later named Grey Cloud Island. (The gun may have been part of the Rogers and Mary Ellen Aston collection, on display at the Roswell Museum and Art Center’s “West of Beyond” exhibit. Rogers Aston had keen interest in collecting the West from a young age and late in life began creating authentic bronze sculptures portraying Western themes.)
Offered as well is an 1873 Springfield trapdoor, Moore’s Patent, Brooklyn, NY single shot pistol with engraved brass grip and two WWII foot lockers with contents of a brother and brother in law, prominent citizens of Bridgewater, Massachusetts.
